Puffin Penny War at WES!!

The 2nd annual Puffin Penny War ended last week for Wiscasset Elementary School students in grades 3-5. The students raised money to donate to the National Audubon Society's Project Puffin, which maintains the seabird islands off the coast of Lincoln County (which they will be visiting on a field trip later in June). The donation will allow for our students to then symbolically adopt a puffin through the project, while the other part of the fundraising goes into a field trip account for the puffin watch experience for the 3-5 students.

The winning grade level gets the opportunity to name the next symbolically adopted pet puffin of WES. Silver coins count as positive points to the grade-level team, and pennies count as negative points. The students begin each day by placing their points in the respective buckets that represent each grade level. Students spend all week learning coin value, money identification, money management, and working with decimals. Last year the 4th-grade class won and named the adopted pet puffin “Marshmallow”. Our winning grade for the 2024 Penny War was Grade 3 and the name of our newly adopted WES pet puffin is “Mr.Noodles III”.

We thank the Wiscasset community for all their support of our local wildlife & the accompanying educational experience!
