The Grateful Tree
Good Morning, Parents and Guardians, I am aware that about 20 high school students are planning to leave the school building at 11:05 today and walk to the Superintendent's office in order to share the message that they don't want their teachers to quit and leave WMHS. I will walk with them to assure safety. We will collect students' names who are walking so we know who is not in the building, as this is a critical safety measure. If you have any questions, concerns or information related to assuring student safety, please reach out. Thank you, Sarah Hubert, AP/AD shubert@wiscassetschools.org 882-7722 ext. 201 504-6078 cell

Wiscasset Schools are closed today, October 26, 2023. Dear Wiscasset Staff and Families, I write with a heavy heart this morning. The mass shooting in Lewiston last night has shaken our entire state. Our hearts go out to the people of Lewiston and Auburn and everyone impacted by this tragedy. I spoke with our members of our Admin Team, other Mid-Coast superintendents, and law enforcement last night and this morning. At this time, the suspect is still at large. According to law enforcement, there is no specific information that would indicate any immediate threats to our region. Closing school today was a very difficult decision. We want to be open for our students and families to provide a sense of normalcy and safety. However, given the fact the suspect is still at large, I have decided to close school. This is out of an abundance of caution; a recognition of the fear, anxiety, and grief many of are feeling today - feelings that are understandably heightened given that the suspect is still at large. When we return to school on Friday, staff will be prepared on how to respond if students bring up the shooting during the school day. This will be done in an age appropriate manner. Staff will not bring up shooting in school; instead, they will be prepared to respond if students bring the topic up. Our goal will be to provide students with a sense of normalcy and security. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel to reach out to me at kandersson@wiscassetschools.org or 208-882-4104. Sincerely, Kim Andersson Superintendent of Schools
