WES has an assembly every month, and different grade levels and groups take turns putting them on. This month the PBIS team was in charge. Everyone gathered in the gym, and they started by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and then the school pledge.
Mrs. Bodkin and Mrs. Larrabee did a skit on morning greetings. Mrs. Larrabee came out with a hat on and her hood pulled up and around her face so you couldn't see her at all. When Mrs. Bodkin said good morning, Mrs. Larrabee couldn't look at her and just mumbled and turned away. The kids thought it was hilarious. Then they did it again the right way. Off came the hat and hood, and this time Mrs. Larrabee looked Mrs. Bodkin in the eye when she said good morning.
Mrs. Bodkin reminded everyone that nobody feels cheerful every morning, and that's okay. If you're not feeling chipper, you can still wave to someone or greet someone differently. It's a friendly way to say hello without a big "good morning!" Then she asked the students for their ideas, and lots of hands went up. Plenty of kids said that looking at someone and making eye contact when you say good morning is a great way to greet them.
Mrs. Bodkin then told little interesting tidbits about the new staff at WES and let the students guess who she was talking about. Did you know that Liz Pope (Educational Technician) worked in an italian bakery for two years, loves trying out new foods and she taught English in China for a year! Did you know that Nicole Appleton (School Nurse) was an artist before she was a nurse, she owns a game store in Bath, and she is a doll collector! Did you know that Noah Pierpont (1st grade teacher) had his car got broken into by a huge black bear, has taken the cog train to the top of Mount Washington, loves to go fishing and was a child model as a little boy! Did you know that Amelia Armstrong (Special Education teacher) has played tennis since she was 7 years old, her first job was a lifeguard, and she is teaching herself how to play the ukelele! Did you know that Michaela Cost (Special Education teacher) has two children, is from Wiscasset, and this is her first year teaching!
After that the "Pawsome" students were recognized. Two students from each grade level were picked by their teachers for being safe, respectful, and responsible all the time, and for being good role models for the rest of the school. Each one got a certificate and a big round of applause.
Ms. Fortier, who most of the kids know as the shoe lady because she teaches them how to tie their shoes, finished things off by leading the whole school, students and staff, in some warm-up exercises to get the day going.
Thank you to the PBIS team, Mrs. Bodkin, Mrs. Larrabee, Mrs. Harmon and Ms. Fortier, for putting on a fun assembly, and congratulations to all of our Pawsome students.
