WMHS freshmen made the annual trek to Hermit Island in Phippsburg for the Maine Coastal Cleanup. The opportunity celebrates our rich coastal resources while providing a citizen science experience for our students. Wolverines scoured the coastline for plastic and foam pieces, fishing/lobster gear, food wrappers, beverage containers, and anything else that had washed up or been left on shore.
In conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup effort established forty years ago, the Ocean Conservancy helps the ICC maintain a database of all trash collected in this worldwide volunteer effort to rid our coasts and waterways of trash. This data collection experience augments student learning about our oceans and climate change, along with learning how a small group contributes to a greater good for our community. The weather on September 18th was picture-perfect, and the class of 2030 made us proud!
