AP United States History Students Study Historic Alna Head Tide
WMHS AP History class studied Alna Head Tide, a remarkably preserved 18th and 19th-century mill village in Alna, Maine, situated along the Sheepscot River. The village’s name signifies the highest point upstream affected by ocean tides. Though the mills burned down long ago, foundations of the mid-18th-century industries (such as sawmills, grist mills, and a cloth-finishing mill) and the first dam (circa 1760) are still visible along the riverbanks. In 1866 alone, two and half million feet of lumber was processed through the Alna Head Tide sawmills.
