Fourth Grade’s May Trip to Hidden Valley Nature Center
Submitted by: Becky Hallowell
Fourth-grade students from Wiscasset Elementary School recently enjoyed their final field trip of the school year to Hidden Valley Nature Center, where they explored the wonders of different ecosystems through hands-on learning and outdoor discovery.
During the visit, students ventured into a bog ecosystem, where they discovered carnivorous plants and learned they were standing on layers of sphagnum moss rather than solid ground. The experience offered students a unique opportunity to observe the delicate balance of nature up close.
The class also took time to visit their “tree friends,” special trees they have observed throughout the year, and wrote farewell notes reflecting on the changes they saw in their tree.
The day continued with an exploration of a pond ecosystem, where students searched for macroinvertebrates and used reference charts to identify the organisms they collected. The activity helped students understand the important role these small creatures play in healthy aquatic environments.
With beautiful weather and enthusiastic young explorers, the trip provided a memorable conclusion to the fourth graders’ year of outdoor learning at Hidden Valley Nature Center. Many students are already talking about returning with their families to further explore the preserve and continue their connection with nature.
