“WMHS Principles of Democracy Tour State Capital”
The WMHS Principles of Democracy class tour Maine’s historic State Capital and the Governor’s Blaine House.
Emma-Leigh Moody, a WMHS Senior attending a Nursing Program at CMCC next fall, “During our tour of the Blaine House, I noticed a lot of historical pieces, like Mr. Blaine’s office filled with items connected to Abraham Lincoln, but I also noticed all the little elegant touches throughout the house, like the china dishes and antique details, that made it feel warm and lived in instead of just historic.”
The Maine State Capital was designed by the renowned architect Charles Bulfinch using Greek Revival elegance in 1828. Bulfinch cultural impact can be seen by his designs with the Massachusetts State House (1788), Connecticut State House (1796), and the United States Capitol rotunda (1817).
Zane Murphey, WMHS student, “I enjoyed having the tour on for the Blaine House and the State Capitol. It was very interesting to learn the history of the Blaine House, and James Blaine prominent U.S. Speaker of House, to be given to Lt. Walker Blaine Beale who unfortunately died in WWI, two months prior before the ending of the conflict.”
James G. Blaine served as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and Republican candidate for president in 1884. The home was donated to the State of Maine in 1919 by Blaine’s daughter, Harriet Blaine Beale, in memory of her son, Walker Blaine Beal, who was killed in action in World War I.
Kaydence Littlefield, a WMHS Senior attending CMCC Early Childhood Education next fall, “I would like to thank the the Blaine House and the Maine State Capital for giving the Principles of Democracy class such an interesting and informative tour. While visiting the State Capital, I found the Global War on Terrorism display with the boots and Maine soldier dog tags especially inspiring because it represented sacrifice and service.”
