A Wolverine Shines at the Healthcare Career Exploration Day
Delaney Withers participated in the Healthcare Career Exploration Day offered by MaineHealth to select students from Wiscasset Middle High School, Medomak Valley High School and Lincoln Academy students at the Lincoln Hospital Education Center in Damariscotta.
Delaney Withers, a Junior at WMHS, enjoyed her experience, “I had such a fun time at The Adventures of Healthcare event! There were so many different activities that I was able to do. My favorite activity out of all of them was being able to learn how to put a real IV (Intravenous, therapy) into somebody. I was able to practice inserting a real IV into a fake arm with fake blood.”
The purpose was to give students hands-on experience with different healthcare professions to help them decide on a future path and get them excited about staying in the medical field in Maine.
Delaney had an opportunity to interact and learn from physicians and Registered Nurses, “I was also able to talk to surgeons, learn how they stitch the skin of people, and I learned how to properly get a gown/glove on and keep it sterile. When we were learning to stitch, we used fake skin and made a slice into it, then we used an actual needle and thread that they use in the operating room.”
