Bangor Savings Bank Hears Pitch from Fourth Grade Students
9/21/25
Fourth-grade students at Wiscasset Elementary School recently had the unique opportunity to learn about financial literacy, teamwork, and public speaking from members of the Bangor Savings Bank management team. Along with their mentor, David Pease, bank leaders Parker Desjardins, Mosi Masimango, Lisa Murphy, and Tanner McClure visited the school to teach students how to craft and deliver a compelling pitch—just like professionals do when requesting funding for a project. The workshop centered around a real need identified by the students: purchasing mulch for the school’s outdoor learning pavilion, which often becomes muddy after rain. Students first worked independently to draft their own pitches, then collaborated in small groups to refine their ideas. After a week of preparation, the class voted on a single pitch to present to the Bangor Savings Bank team. The students’ pitches were creative and persuasive, including hooks that helped the audience imagine slipping in the mud and even losing a shoe, as well as “win-win” arguments, such as the idea that Bangor Savings Bank would attract more customers because people would know it is a kind and generous bank. At the conclusion of the event, the Bangor Savings Bank team surprised the class with a “big check” for $350 to purchase mulch for the pavilion, bringing the students’ project one step closer to reality. In addition to coaching students on writing and presenting with confidence and poise, the Bangor Savings Bank team shared insights into the wide variety of careers within the banking industry. It highlighted the bank’s strong commitment to supporting community projects. This partnership between Bangor Savings Bank and Wiscasset Elementary School demonstrates the power of connecting students with community leaders, helping young learners build real-world skills while addressing meaningful projects close to home.
