State house visit

“State Legislature Welcomes Wiscasset Students”

The 132st Maine House of Representatives welcomed the WMHS Principles of Democracy and AP American History class to the State Capital and Blaine House.

Ijesity Rhinebolt, AP History student said, “During my visit to the Maine State Legislature I came to the understanding that the ties between typical civilian life and state life are very closely related in the State of Maine.”

State Representative Wayne Farrin (D-House District 47) of Jefferson gave an informative guided tour. Earlier in the academic year, Rep. Ed Polewarczyk  (R-Wiscasset) visited the WMHS Principles of Democracy class discussing Committee on Education and Cultural Affairs and various policy initiatives.

“I noticed people from different organizations and people on their own terms coming to the state house voicing their opinions and talking with their representatives, which is very helpful when helping decide big changes like the kinds that go through the legislative process.”, said Rhinebolt.

The Maine State Capital was designed by the renowned architect Charles Bulfinch using Greek Revival elegance in 1828. Bulfinch cultural impact can be seen by his designs with the Massachusetts State House (1788), Connecticut State House (1796), and the United States Capitol rotunda (1817).

Xoe Morse architecture observed, “My favorite thing about our trip to the state house was being able to observe the architecture and all the details in the building. Looking around makes me wonder how much time was put into every intricate part and what they used for it being so long ago. Even the smallest details elevate the surroundings and the whole atmosphere.”

The Greek Revival is a style of architecture inspired by the symmetry, simplicity, and elegance of the ancient Greek buildings of 5th century B.C.
