On February 26, 2025, Wiscasset Middle High School hosted a live performance of Shakespeare's Hamlet in the Stover gymnasium, offering students a unique, immersive learning experience. Professional actors from Portland Stage brought the iconic play to life, helping students engage with literature beyond the classroom. This event aligns with the school’s commitment to place-based learning, which connects students with their local and global communities.
Though students regularly read Shakespeare in class, the live performance allowed them to experience the play in a new, impactful way. "Experiencing Hamlet onstage helped me see the emotion and how it was supposed to be portrayed," said Sophomore Xoe Morse. “You can really see how the people interact and show the actions that aren’t always explained in the book.”
Following the performance, Portland Stage led workshops where students actively participated in scenes, gaining insight into the characters and the story. This hands-on approach encouraged both creative expression and critical thinking.
This event reflects Wiscasset Middle High School's dedication to place-based learning and connecting students with the world beyond textbooks. English teacher Jake McCarthy noted, “It was inspiring to see students interacting with these professional artists and seeing the way that artistic expression can be relevant and meaningful in the real world.”
This collaboration with Portland Stage is one example of the school’s ongoing efforts to provide innovative, engaging educational experiences, helping students think critically and connect with their community and the world.
