“Wiscasset Students Welcome Sheriff Todd Brackett”

The Wiscasset High School, Principles of Democracy (POD) and Criminology course welcomed Sheriff Todd Bracket of Lincoln County to share civic leadership and the role of county government.

Olivia Warlick, a WMHS senior shared, “Law enforcement is also about building community relations and maintaining a strong bond and sense of equality between civilians and those who wear the badge. While the main goal is protecting and serving the public necessary, there is a deeper concept to law enforcement.”

Under Brackett's leadership, the Sheriff's Office has implemented programs to keep Lincoln County residents safe like CodeRED Emergency Notification System, tip411 anonymous tip line, RUOK and Project Lifesaver. In 1998, he became the Chief of Police for Damariscotta and he was elected Sheriff of Lincoln County in 2002.

Dominic Waite gained knowledge, “The Maine county Sheriff department is a range of services from across the state as police work and court work. Certain departments have their own counties to take care of but can work together.”

The Criminology Course instructed by Ms. Alyson Graham is the study of crime and criminal behavior, informed by principles of sociology and other non-legal fields, including psychology, economics, statistics, and anthropology.

Ismael Martinez was impressed, “Learning about the process of becoming a Sheriff really brings to light the drive and commitment that a young aspiring deputy must have. This really brings a sense of appreciation from me, and the community should feel the same.”

The Principles of Democracy (POD) Course is modeled after AP U.S. Government, and Civics Course with a Place-Based Education philosophy taught by Mr. Shanon Cotta. A Place-Based approach connects learning and communities with the primary goals of increasing student engagement boosting academic outcomes, impacting communities, and promoting understanding of the world around us.

Cameron Main said, "Talking with Sheriff Bracket gave me a good idea of how police conduct their duties in Lincoln County. I feel pretty good about where the Lincoln County Sheriff Department currently is and where it will be in the future."
