Ancient Cemetery Press Release
The Ancient Cemetery had some visitors from Wiscasset Elementary School recently. On
Wednesday, October 30, the fourth-grade students walked to the Ancient Cemetery to research
the stories left on gravestones. They used mulit-digit subtraction skills to determine the ages of
people buried in the cemetery. Students paid close attention to the different carvings on
gravestones and were struck by the number of infants in the cemetery.
On Friday, November 1, the third–grade students also walked to the Ancient Cemetery. While at
the cemetery they practiced multiplication skills by looking for arrays of gravestones and
creating equations. They also used differences between birth and death to find how long people
lived. The third-grade students examined the stones closely to learn what types of names were
used in the 1700’s and 1800’s.
Students at Wiscasset Elementary School are fortunate to be surrounded by a bounty of natural
and historical resources within walking distance. They look forward to learning more about their
town.
