The Spirit of Giving at WMHS

Mrs. Melanson is a Life Skills teacher at the Wiscasset Middle
High School. She, along with her ed techs, Mrs. Jones and Ms.
Howard, provide a positive learning environment each day to their
students.
Believing that, what you give out will eventually come back to you,
Mrs. Melanson created the Karma Cart. She felt this would be a
fun way to teach her students the “Spirit of Giving”. Each week,
instructions are given to the students on the preparation, and
baking of cookies, cakes, muffins and other tasty treats, including
soups! They are then delivered to the staff lounge for all to
enjoy. Because the lesson is about giving and not getting, all
treats are free! Donations are accepted, of course, but not
necessary to enjoy a treat. The students are then rewarded by
knowing their cooking skills brighten someone’s day and made
them smile.
Mrs. Melanson also believes that teaching her students the spirit of
giving, will not only make them more considerate of others needs,
but provide them with a sense of satisfaction and purpose. Giving
to others with no expectations in return, is a valuable lesson that
will benefit them throughout their lives.
The following recipients have benefited from the Karma Cart
donations over the past few years:

Toys for Tots- $230.
Fuel Assistance for Elderly- $100
Animal Shelter- $75
Cancer patients (colleagues) $100 food gift card

A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Melanson and her staff and students for giving so much to others at this time of year and all year long.
